Seki Shun

under this fragile glory of blossoms
spring is rapt with beauty; and
the heart loosened by gladness
shoots sunwards into a luminosity of
bloodwarm cherries bursting
the sweet dark of fall

I lift my grandchild in my arms
while he reaches up
in wonder at the branches
fat pink fingers open like the petals above him
and suddenly the weight of this child
I feel as a sorrow almost too heavy to bear
