Marc Nair started writing poetry at the age of 19 and studied English Literature, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree from the National University of Singapore. He is the author of eleven collections of poetry: Along the Yellow Line (2007), Chai: Travel Poems (2010), Postal Code (2013), Animal City (2014), The Poet of Unlove (2015) and Spomenik (2016), Intersection (2017), Vital Possessions (2018), Sightlines (2019), Handbook of Daily Movement (2020) and The Earth in Our Bones (2023).
Nair’s roots are in spoken word, beginning in 2004 with The Singapore Poetry Slam. In 2008, he represented Singapore at the Indian Ocean Poetry Slam and in 2009, at the World Cup of Slam Poetry in Paris. He has created and performed over 10 original full-length performance poetry shows and has published three full-length spoken word albums.
Nair has collaborated with dancers, musicians, visual artists and photographers on projects that have ranged from exhibitions to live performances. In 2024, he wrote and directed Thank You For Holding, a multidisciplinary interactive performance that was commissioned for Textures Festival 2024.
Nair is also a photographer who has had three solo exhibitions of poetry and photography.
Nair was the 2015 writer-in-residence at Gardens By The Bay, Singapore and the 2016 NTU-NAC Artist in Residence. In 2016, he received the Young Artist Award. He holds a PhD from RMIT University.
